Researchers Discover Connection Between GMOs, Weight Gain and Obesity

Looking around, it’s no secret that Americans are putting on the pounds unlike any other time in history. Sure, we can’t discount sedentary lifestyles, processed foods and outrageous sugar consumption as contributing factors. At the same time, an elephant in the room is often overlooked — one known as genetically modified food. Researches are beginning to connect the dots, realizing that the possibility of GMOs contributing to weight gain is not as far-fetched as once thought.

GMOs, bigger appetites and the fattening of America

A long-term project in Norway investigating the health effects of genetically modified foods has come to some startling conclusions regarding the role that GMOs play in the worldwide obesity epidemic. Over a period of 90 days, test rats were fed either food containing genetically modified corn or feed which did not contain GM corn. The scientists discovered that the rats fed a GM corn diet had bigger appetites and grew fatter than those on the non-GM diet. It was also found that rats fed a diet of fish raised on GM corn had a similar result — increased weight gain.

 

As noted in ScienceNordic, “If the same effect applies to humans, how would it impact on people eating this type of corn over a number of years, or even eating meat from animals feeding on this corn?” asked lead researcher, Ashild Krogdahl, PhD, a professor at the Norwegian School of Veterinary Science.

Anthony Samsel agreed in his article “Obesity, Corn, GMOs”:

“Translated to humans, the study suggests: if you dine on meat from an animal which was fed GE grains or consume products made from GE grains like corn, you could get the same adverse life altering effects. You could get fatter faster and retain the weight. These GE foods transfer their effects to you.”

The study also observed changes in the immune system, intestinal structure and digestive and reproductive organs, as well as alterations in the liver, kidneys, pancreas and adrenal glands of animals who were fed a GM diet. The implications are monumental. That the animals were less able to digest protein and had changes in the gut lining not only influences obesity but can also give rise to a slew of health issues such as colitis, diabetes, digestive disorders, inflammatory bowel disease, autoimmune disorders, sexual dysfunction, sterility, asthma and autism, among many others.

According to the Organic Consumers Association, it’s estimated that 75 percent of processed foods contain GMOs — and 80 percent of all food consumed in the U.S. is processed. It’s no surprise that the Centers for Disease Control’s (CDC) weight gain data shows that obesity has spiked dramatically since the early 1990s — which just happens to be soon after genetically modified crops were introduced into the food supply.

Considering that 68 percent of Americans are overweight and 34 percent are obese — with Reutersreporting an annual price tag of $190 billion in related medical costs — isn’t it about time our representatives take a serious look at how GMOs are contributing to this modern day public health crisis?

Nearly nine million Americans now take pharmaceutical drugs just to sleep at night

An increasing number of Americans are having trouble falling asleep at night and staying that way, says a new government report on sleeping pill use. According to data compiled by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), roughly nine million Americans now pop pharmaceutical sleeping drugs like Ambien (zolpidem) and Lunesta (eszopiclone) on a regular basis just to get some normal shut-eye, a disturbing trend that appears to be ever-escalating.

For their study, Yinong Chong, an epidemiologist at the CDC, and her colleagues looked at data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey on 17,000 individuals aged 20 years or older. The survey evaluated patterns of sleeping pill use among participants between the years of 2005 and 2010 and included various demographic distinctions such as race, sex and education level.

It was discovered that about four percent of U.S. adults aged 20 or older, which tabulates out to about 8.6 million people, had used a prescription sleep aid within the past month. Additionally, a shocking one in six adults with a diagnosed sleep disorder, and one in eight adults with reported sleeping troubles, admitted to using prescription sleep aids. As far as the demographic group with the highest reported use, older, non-hispanic, white, female adults with an education were the most prone to using sleeping pills.

“So far, studies on sleep aid use are mostly based on administrative claims data, which describe the number of times sleep aid prescriptions are filled rather than how many people have actually used prescription sleep aids,” explains the CDC. “This report provides the first person-based national data on prescription sleep aid use among the noninstitutionalized U.S. adult population.”

While older adults, mostly seniors, were found to be the most common users of sleeping pills, younger people are also becoming addicts. A 2008 marketing research study conducted by Thomson Reuters found that, between the years of 1998 and 2006, sleeping pill use among young adults between the ages of 18 and 24 tripled. And based on this fresh data from the CDC, sleeping pill use within this demographic is only expected to continue increasing.

“What’s surprising is how rapidly [sleeping pill] use is growing among the young,” said William Marder, senior vice president and general manager for the health care business of Thomson Reuters to The New York Times back in 2009. “It’s pretty rapid growth for a group that is generally not one of [the] high-utilizers.”

Ambien users, for instance, commonly report erratic behavior, amnesia and even “sleep driving” and other dangerous activities. Worse, a 2012 study published in the British Medical Journal found that people who take prescription sleeping pills regularly are nearly five times more likely to die within 2.5 years compared to people who do not take the drugs.

“I was praying to God and crying, ‘Help me find the exit,'” explained Chicago resident Yvonne Oby, a 60-year-old manager of a legal firm, to NBC News about the effects of Ambien CR on her mental acuity. Oby reportedly suffered a panic-like attack while driving after taking Ambien CR, which made her believe she was driving at a dangerously high speed. “It felt like I had no control.”

Nearly two dozen medical studies prove that vaccines can cause autism

Mainstream doctors and media pundits are notorious for claiming that the vaccine-autism debate is over and that no legitimate scientific evidence exists to suggest even a possible link between vaccinations and autism spectrum disorders (ASD): case closed. But a thoroughly-researched report recently published by Arjun Walia over at Activist Post reveals that there are at least 22 published scientific studies that show a link between vaccines and autism and that there are many more out there with similar findings.

Much of the original controversy stems from Dr. Andrew Wakefield’s study back in the late 1990s, which exposed gastrointestinal inflammation as an obvious side effect of vaccination with the combination measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccine. Dr. Wakefield obviously struck a major nerve with his research, which was quickly torn apart by the establishment and maliciously paraded around as being fraudulent, even though his groundbreaking findings have repeatedly been validated and replicated by many other studies.

A 2002 study published in the Journal of Biomedical Sciences, for instance, observed a causal effect between the MMR vaccine and autism, particularly with regards to the measles portion of the vaccine. The researchers from Utah State University concluded that MMR is capable of inducing an abnormal measles infection in some children, which in turn can lead to neurological problems that fall under the umbrella of ASD.

Another study published in the journal Entropy in 2012 observed a strong correlation between the MMR vaccine and autism, except in this case aluminum was the culprit. According to an abstract of this study, vaccines that contain aluminum are particularly toxic to children, who end up later being diagnosed with ASD, as they have insufficient serum levels of both sulfate and glutathione. The aluminum found in some vaccines, in other words, appears to be a primary aggravator of ASD symptoms.

“Regardless of the MMR vaccine and autism debate, there are still a number of studies that link vaccines to a possible autism connection,” writes Walia. “[M]ultiple courts worldwide have ruled in favor of vaccines causing autism, brain damage and other complications that include the MMR vaccine,” he adds, noting that many other side effects besides autism have been observed in relation to vaccines.

Heavy metals, adjuvants, preservatives and other vaccine additives all linked to causing autism

Perhaps the most interesting aspect of Walia’s extensive research on the subject is the fact that there appear to be multiple ingredients in vaccines responsible for triggering autism. Besides toxic metals like aluminum and mercury, vaccines also contain adjuvant materials, preservatives and other additives that have all been identified as culprits in the studies listed in his article. Realistically, each of these additives is most likely toxic both in isolation and in combination with the other additives, eliciting compounded toxicity depending on the mixture.

“Oxidative stress, brain inflammation and microgliosis have been much documented in association with toxic exposures including various heavy metals,” admits one study out of Massachusetts General Hospital, which verified that autistic individuals possess a unique type of neuroinflammation in their brain tissue that points to vaccine damage.

Several of the studies listed in Walia’s report also pin thimerosal, a toxic mercury derivative that is still being added to multidose vials of flu vaccine, as a trigger in causing the types of brain damage linked to autism. One particular study out of the University of Texas Health Science Center found that for every 1,000 pounds of mercury released into the environment, there is a consequential 61 percent increase in autism rates.

With thimerosal-containing flu shots now being administered to children as young as six months old, it is highly plausible that ASD-associated brain damage is still occurring as a result of mercury being injected directly into muscle tissue.
